Hippocrates.  Apparently, gut health does not help with nasal issues.

All disease begins in the gut. – Hippocrates

One year ago, my mother died, my employer became a Blue Zone workplace, and I discovered my gut.

(Previously, my only knowledge of my gut was the unwanted belly pooch that I may or may not have threatened to excise with my sewing scissors on more than one occasion.)

VERY simple explanations of a very complex topic:

Leaky Gut: When the cells in the intestinal lining are not functioning properly, allowing things like toxins, microbes, undigested food particles, and more can escape from your intestines and travel throughout your body via your bloodstream.

It causes CHRONIC (as opposed to acute) INFLAMMATION.

Inflammation is the response of the immune system to foreign invaders, toxins and cell injury. Chronic inflammation, involving the entire body, is believed to drive many killer diseases.

MANY KILLER DISEASES.  My mother died a horrible death.  Diagnosed at 42 with Parkinson’s, which was later accompanied by it’s sister disease, Dystonia, and finally, during her last 10-15 years, increasing dementia.  ALL three have roots in gut health and a fucked up microbiome.

These are NOT just diseases that you have to sit back and “get”.  NOT a product of age or genetics.  There are steps that can be taken to prevent, reverse, and perhaps even heal these and other devastating diseases.

Mom didn’t know.  Nobody did.  I am in no way blaming her.  Not blaming anyone.  But her death, google, and the internet have taught me a few things.

  1. I have a lot more control over my health and wellness than I ever previously thought.
  2. When I know better, I have an opportunity to do better.
  3. Food can harm or heal.  All about choice.

Over the past year, I have taken steps to “heal my gut”.  And the changes and healing that have taken place extend far beyond my physical body.  Mind and Spirit have healed as well.  And it all started with my fork, which healed my gut.

I was told by a dear colleague and friend recently, “you’re different, and not just thinner, but you just radiate happiness.”  I replied, “yeah, probably because I’m happy.”  I am happier than I ever thought possible.  This happiness is NOT about my physical body.  Although it is wonderful to have a healthy and functioning body.  It is about my soul.  And, I maintain, it all started with my fork, which healed my gut.

Of final note:  There are about a gabillion studies which support the role of the microbiome in mood disorders and even its affect upon our very personalities.  Changes in the microbiome make depressed mice happy, timid mice brave, fat mice thin, and sick mice well.  See HERE for more on that.

So, I had a choice.  I could go silently into the night, accept my fate, and continue to be so very sick and miserable.  I could look for yet another pill, (which I had been doing for over 20 years), and I could basically die a slow and horrible death.  While living a slow and horrible life.

Or I could try.  Show some faith and trust.  Make some changes.  OH, and EVERY single one of my initial changes were free, did not require a doctor’s note or a prescription.  In the end, the only barrier to my health and wellness, was me.  Not genetics, not environment, not my history, but me.  My own stubborn ass.

Try.  Trust.  Live.  Live big, Live joy.

Light and Love,

Big Laura
