Ruth and Blue Zones

February 2016:

  • My mother (Ruth) passed away after a long and ugly battle with Parkinson’s, Dystonia, and dementia.
  • My employer became a “Blue Zone” workplace and we had to attend a MANDATORY staff meeting with the Blue Zone people.

If I remember correctly, I attended the mandatory meeting and left for the funeral the next day.  These two events led to change.  Led to this blog, (aren’t we all thrilled??)

In the interest of brevity, I’ll bullet point Blue Zones:

  • Dan Buettner is an explorer for National Geographic
  • Dan travels the globe finding pockets of humanity that experience extraordinary longevity.
  • Dan and his team circle said pockets on the map in blue pen, hence the name, “Blue Zones”.
  • Dan and team do some research, and find NINE commonalities among these geographic regions and cultures.  Hence, the POWER NINE.
  • LOOK at the nine.  These are not just a nice idea, or someone’s opinion.  I got the book, read the book, and did some further reading.  The research is pretty solid.  I’m not talking about causation versus correlation.  I’m just putting it out there, people who live longer and more importantly, BETTER, practice these 9 principles.
  • Dan attempts to replicate the power nine in various communities across the US.  Fort Worth, Texas is the largest Blue Zones Project to date.

Too much?

NOT all of the Blue Zones practice ALL of the principles.

OHMYGOSH, I love a good Venn Diagram!

Distilled down even further, check out the FIVE commonalities in the center of the Venn Diagram.

LONGEVITY and health are not just determined by diet and exercise.   Family, social engagement, tribe, relationships, in ADDITION to movement and plant-based eating are found in all Blue Zones.

Still to much?  Pick one.  Start with  hugging your kids.  Hugging your tribe.  And no weenie hugs!  Hug like you mean it.

More on my journey through the power nine to follow.

Light and Love,

Big Laura
